SELLING BIAS: Coverage of the Cloned Stem Cell Research Crisis in Korea

Hee Won Kim is a science reporter for the Hankook Ilbo, a national daily newspaper in South Korea, where she’s worked since 1993. She covers science, focusing on the basic research inspiring mental imagination and curiosity in readers. For example, she recently wrote the special series, “Darwin is Future”, including interviews of Richard Dawkins, Edward O Wilson, and some eminent Darwinians. Her objective coverage on the Dr. Hwang cloning scandal in 2005 brought her awards such as “Woman Journalist of the Year” and “Science Journalist of the Year”. After seeing the chaotic and negative features of the media at the beginning of the Hwang scandal, Hee Won wroted her master thesis “Mass Media’s Strategy for Covering Uncertainty” (Sogang University, 2006) by interviewing key reporters who had covered the scandal. Her interests include journalist ethics, research integrity, and the communication between experts and reporters. She translated two science books.
